In Nichiren Shoshu, making pilgrimage to the Head Temple Taisekiji is called Tozan.

The true purpose of Nichiren Daishonin’s advent is the inscription of Dai-Gohonzon of the High Sanctuary of Essential Teachings which is solemnly protected at Taisekiji.  The High Priest, who received the Lifeblood of the True Heritage of Nichiren Daishonin, lives in Taisekiji.  Therefore the Head Temple Taisekiji is a sacred place where the entire law and spirit of Nichiren Daishonin have been preserved.

At the Head Temple, believers who go on Tozan are allowed to directly worship the Dai-Gohonzon.  This is called Naihai or Gokaihi.  As Nichiren Daishonin said in his Gosho,

“A bird gives off a golden gleam as it reaches Mt. Sumeru”.

By making a pilgrimage to Taisekji and receiving audience with the Dai- Gohonzon of the High Sanctuary of Essential Teachings, our sins will disappear and our wishes will come true.  Moreover, we will be able to follow the right path to Buddhahood.

During the Daishonin’s lifetime, Nichimyo Shonin and her young daughter walked all the way from Kamakura to Sado to see the Daishonin.  Abutsubo visited Daishonin in Mt. Minobu from Sado Island although he was in his ninety’s.

We should follow their spirit of “yearning to see Nichiren Daishonin without begrudging one’s life” and go on to Tozan overcoming any obstacle.

What is Tozan?
