{"id":334,"date":"2017-03-15T17:45:18","date_gmt":"2017-03-15T17:45:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.senmyozanhokkejitemple.com\/?p=334"},"modified":"2017-03-15T17:45:18","modified_gmt":"2017-03-15T17:45:18","slug":"what-is-karma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.senmyozanhokkejitemple.com\/index.php\/en\/2017\/03\/15\/what-is-karma\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Karma?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Karma is a Sanskrit word that means action, and encompasses the results of the action. \u00a0If one hurts another, the action vanishes when the event is over, but the physical and emotional consequences remain. \u00a0Karma is action that creates an influence over future events in one&#8217;s life.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Karma is created by three categories of action: thoughts, words, and deeds, which include all the activities in life. \u00a0From this, we can understand the relationship of cause and effect in the present. \u00a0Those in sports and music will get good results if they exercise and practice. \u00a0This is a simple example of cause and effect in one\u2019s present life.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The principle of karma in Buddhism goes beyond one\u2019s present life. \u00a0In Buddhism, results that manifest in one\u2019s present life can be due to behavior in past lives. \u00a0This principle also extends into the future. \u00a0The Sutra of the Foundation in Observing the Mind (Shinjikan-gyo) states:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you wish to know the causes you have accumulated in the past [in your past existences], look at the effects that are manifested in the present. \u00a0And if you wish to know the effects that will be manifested in the future, look at the causes you are accumulating in the present\u2026\u201d (Gosho, p. 571)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The life into which one was born is a current result brought about by karma created in past lives. \u00a0One\u2019s actions in the present will show in one\u2019s future. \u00a0Causes accumulated in the past are called past karma, and the causes currently being created are called present karma.\u00a0 The way to change Karma in Nichiren Daishonin\u2019s teaching is not fatalism. \u00a0It is the teaching that allows us to truly change our karma, as he demonstrated in his own life. \u00a0The Daishonin states in \u201cLetter from Sado\u201d:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy present exile is not because of any crime. \u00a0It is solely so that I may expiate in this lifetime my past heavy slanders and be freed from the three evil paths in the next\u201d.
